Playscapes and setbacks -I am not in favor of regulating children’s playhouses or children’s play equipment

I am inclined to vote against any regulation of playhouses - and do not want to further limit the placement of hvac and pool equipment in setbacks. We have done a lot to codify the recommendations of the comprehensive residential code review committee and it’s time to give it a rest.

Playscapes and setbacks -I am not in favor of regulating children’s playhouses or children’s play equipment

There is ambiguity in the code - and even if we want to make sure playhouses are not regulated we need to do a better job in the code of defining what is a “playhouse” vs a auxiliary building,, such as a granny flat. That does not necessarily mean anything will pass, and if something does it may...

Building Height Limits and Building Setbacks

I’m think there is a clear consensus for parallel plane with tenting. 25’ height at the side setbacks increasing to 35’ every foot in from the setback is good. Excepting street side yards. I’d like to see tenting along the back too. I’d also like to see 20’ max at the 10’ setback, increasing...

Citizenship requirement for boards and commissions

I’ve put it on the agenda for our next council meeting to remove the citizenship requirement for all boards and commissions. We will have a vote - if my motion gets seconded.

    Residential Code Task Force

I would like city council to establish a task force with a limited assignment: to gather community input and measure public support for any residential building code reform, and recommend next steps, if any. I would expect the task force to have public hearings, do outreach and opinion surveys...

    Residential Code Task Force

Before tonight’s council meeting I would like to float some suggestions to the rest of council about the proposed comprehensive residential zoning and building code review committee. I would like to acknowledge that Sara Hutson and Brook Brown have led the residential code reform with their...

    Residential Code Task Force

I started with the idea that we needed to move quickly and take on residential code issues one by one. I’ve changed my thinking somewhat. I do think we need to close the loophole on setbacks and on building height. 35’ is a good height but our current ordinance increasing it up to 45’ on a...

Bond Issues - Water Lines and New City Hall and Public Safety Building

The voters have approved bonds for new water lines and for a new City Hall and Public Safety building. Our engineering firm K Friese is expected to present a proposal at our January council meeting for engineering services to design the water system upgrade, along with a proposed phasing of the...

Appointments to City Commissions and Committees

Council approved some year-end reappointments and some new appointments to various committees and commissions. I want to clarify the purpose of service on committees and commissions, and the process for being appointed. Most city commissions, like the Park Commission, are simply “advisory”...
