At the May 2, 2023 meeting of Rollingwood's Utility Commission unanimously voted to support City Council's efforts to negotiate a Right of Way Licensing Agreement with Google Fiber Texas in an effort to make Google's internet services available in Rollingwood. The Right of Way Agreement, if executed, will allow the city of Rollingwood and Google Fiber to begin planning the network and installation. Implementation and installation details will still need to be clarified and agreed upon before any network installation begins. Permits must be approved before any construction begins. Prior to permits being approved, deployment methods and approaches will be validated, agreed upon, and finalized between Google Fiber and the city.
Google Fiber's representative made an excellent presentation to the Utility Commission that may be viewed here:
Google Fiber indicated that underground deployment would be their preferred deployment approach. In some areas of Austin, Google Fiber's trunk lines to be placed in trenches between the curb and gutter and the street. At the Utility Commission meeting, questions about trunk lines under the street were raised. I reached out to Google Fiber's representative and received the following response:
The closest network we have is right across Bee Cave Rd. You can go to this pin HERE and see our plant (Picture below if this pin). Note: this plant was built in Nov-2016. Since then, we've updated the backfill we use and moved to green lid drop vaults.
If you want to see new spec network construction, you can go HERE. This is a bit further of a drive.
As stated above, underground deployment is preferred and would likely provide the most stable network. However, it was also noted that Google Fiber has a deployment toolkit with other various deployment alternatives if necessary.
